Best Portable Pressure Washers with Water Tank

In contrast to their larger brothers, the conventional high-pressure cleaners, portable pressure washers have the option of using only rechargeable batteries and a water tank integrated in the housing. By dispensing with any power and water connection, portable pressure washers can really be used anywhere. This fact makes them practical helpers, both in professional and private environments. For example, if you live in the city and don’t have your own garage, you can still clean your car with these devices. Likewise, mountain bikes can be quickly freed from dirt after a tour or garden furniture can be cleaned. With the diverse nozzles and pressure settings, it is even possible to simply water plants.

There are certainly many models on the market that meet your needs, but it is important to choose the best portable pressure washers. To do this, however, you first need to get to know the most important functions of these devices. Only then will you be able to get the best value for money. We will therefore look at the most important buying criteria in the next chapter.

What to look for when buying a portable pressure washer

Size: First of all, you need to consider what tasks the portable pressure washer will be used for and how much time they will take. The larger the water tank, the longer you can use the device without interruption and, as a rule, the higher the power available. However, the weight and dimensions also increase with the tank volume. Smaller models have a tank volume of about 5 litres and are ideal for cleaning a mountain bike before stowing it in the car. In contrast, larger units can hold up to 20 litres of water and have many functions and accessories. Of course, they are a bit bulkier, but with a slightly higher pressure and matching breasts, they can remove even stubborn dirt.

Nozzles: To be able to clean different things, it is important to be able to adjust the pressure and the spray pattern. If you want to wash your dog, you need different attachments and settings than if you want to remove dirt from a bicycle or motorbike. Especially with the larger models, there are several cleaning attachments included and you can choose between different pressure levels.

Detergent: A fully integrated detergent tank is rarely found in portable pressure washers. This would only make the device unnecessarily heavy and bulky. However, some models have a detergent tank that is attached directly to the nozzle. This is particularly practical for washing cars when things have to be done quickly. If the pressure washer you have chosen does not have the option to add detergent, you can also apply the detergent with a manual spray bottle.

Please resist the temptation to add detergent directly into the integrated water tank of the pressure washer. Although this may seem very convenient, it can damage the pressure washer and the pump. Unfortunately, this means that with many models only the water pressure is available to remove mud and dirt. Whether you really need cleaning agents depends on the application. If you only want to clean your mountain bike, then it is probably superfluous. However, if you want to make your garden furniture shine after the winter, a cleaning agent is indispensable.

Hose length: Pressure washers with long hoses are particularly practical because the device does not have to be moved around as often. With smaller models, you have to cope with hose lengths of 2 to 3 metres. This is not so bad, however, as the units are light and can be taken along easily. Larger units offer up to a 6-metre hose. This puts the working radius almost on a par with conventional high-pressure cleaners.

You should also pay attention to the quality of the hose. Cheap models in particular often use inferior materials and are poorly made. If the hose tears, this is particularly annoying. Ideally, the hose is flexible and yet made of a durable material. Many mobile high-pressure cleaners also have a storage facility on the device. This protects the hose at least somewhat from damage.

Accessories: Portable pressure washers come with various accessories depending on the model. Some you will probably expect, others are more suitable for special cases:

  • Cleaning brushes: Cleaning brushes are particularly suitable for scrubbing wooden furniture and steps. They can also be useful for washing cars and bicycles.
  • Belts: Very few models offer this feature. With the help of straps, the pressure washer can be comfortably hung over the shoulder and carried around.
  • Connection for water tap: On some models, a hose can be connected directly to the water tank for a continuous water supply. This may seem superfluous, since the point is to keep the pressure washer particularly mobile. However, in some situations it is practical to be able to clean without the hassle of refilling.

Advantages and disadvantages of portable pressure washers with water tank and battery

Advantages and disadvantages of portable pressure washers with water tank and battery

Portable pressure washers were developed with the requirement to be as compact as possible and independent of water and electricity connections. These devices bring with them a whole range of advantages, but also some disadvantages, which we will take a closer look at below:

One of the biggest advantages of mobile pressure washers is their very compact design. The smallest models are not much bigger than a shoe box and weigh less than 3 kg with an empty water tank. Conventional pressure washers can weigh up to 20 kg and therefore cannot be moved so quickly and easily over a large area. When it comes to light cleaning tasks, it makes little sense to put a full-fledged pressure washer into operation, set it up and attach all the connections. This task can easily be handled by a more compact unit. This is precisely why many people buy mobile high-pressure cleaners.

Another plus point is the independence from water and electricity connections. Standard pressure washers are capable of sucking water from rivers or buckets themselves, but they still rely on a power connection. Apart from that, it is not necessarily practical to transport a full bucket of water in the car, for example.

Mobile pressure washers are therefore powered by rechargeable batteries, so there are neither sockets nor annoying cables in the way. The water tank is also already fully integrated in the device. The pressure washer filled with water can also be easily transported in the car without spilling water. More mobility in the segment of high-pressure cleaners is hardly possible, so it is not surprising that the devices are becoming more and more popular. By dispensing with any connections, the device can be easily carried around and used anywhere.

Conventional pressure washers can easily represent pressures of over 100 bar. However, the energy consumption for this is considerable and is well over 1000 W. Such high performance cannot be achieved with battery-powered devices, so the pressure level is also much lower. If you want to thoroughly clean your entire concrete slab driveway, you should therefore buy a powerful pressure washer with a water and power connection.

Depending on their size, mobile pressure washers can reach pressures of up to 70 bar. This could even be used to clean patio slabs, but only quite slowly, so that battery life can become a problem.

This brings us to the second major disadvantage of mobile pressure washers. The battery life at the highest pressure level is usually no more than 15 minutes and the water tank is also drained relatively quickly. Well-known brands usually use their own battery systems. If you already own some of these brands, you may have a certain stock of batteries that can be quickly replaced.

Some models also have a water inlet to the tank. If a water connection is available at the place of use, this can save you the hassle of refilling the tank.

Areas of application for portable pressure washers

Depending on the model and size, portable pressure washers offer very different pressures. From 5 bar, which is slightly more pressure than in a garden hose, to 70 bar, everything is possible. Accordingly, the areas of application also differ considerably.

With 70 bar, almost all tasks that can be done with conventional pressure washers can be mastered. However, the operating time is very limited by the battery life and the water tank. We therefore recommend powerful mobile pressure washers for the following areas of application:

  • Small terraces and paths
  • Wood
  • garden furniture
  • small facades

Of course, the powerful models are also suitable for all the applications

Applications that we present for weaker models. If considerably less than 70 bar is available, not all dirt can be removed from all surfaces. The areas of application are then limited to materials that are easier to clean:

  • Washing bicycles & cars
  • Plastic garden furniture
  • Garden tools
  • Washing pets
  • Use as a camping shower

This list is by no means complete. You are sure to find other useful applications for mobile pressure washers.

The right size water tank

The right size water tank

The water tank capacities are just as large as the differences in performance. As a rule, pressure washers with more power also have a larger water tank. The range here is from 4 litres to 20 litres.

Which water tank size makes the most sense for you depends on the application and duration. For a unit with a large water tank (15 l – 20 l), you can expect an operating time of 5 minutes to 15 minutes until the water tank is empty. The higher the set pressure, the faster the water is used. Even though these times sound very low, it should be noted that in most cases the pressure washer does not run continuously. Small breaks are often needed to reposition the water jet.

Portable pressure washers with small water tanks (4 l -10 l) usually have considerably less power. Here, flow rates of 2 l/min to 3 l/min can be expected. Due to the low tank capacity, the water is nevertheless used up in less than 10 minutes. Moreover, since these units do not always have a pressure regulator, no water can be saved by further reducing the output. In extreme cases, at a flow rate of 2 l/min, a 4 l water tank is already used up after 2 minutes. This time is at most sufficient to clean small objects.

Selecting the right battery

Selecting the right battery

In addition to the water tank, the battery also limits the operating time. Fortunately, most manufacturers now have a whole range of garden tools that all work with the same rechargeable batteries. If you already own battery-powered tools, then it only makes sense to buy a mobile pressure washer from the appropriate manufacturer. Especially batteries with a high capacity are expensive, so that the right battery system alone can make the difference between buying and not buying.

The question of how long a continuous operation of portable pressure washers. The question of how long continuous operation of portable pressure washers is possible cannot be answered in a general way. The battery life is strongly dependent on the performance of the device and the battery capacity. With a powerful high-pressure cleaner, it is possible to empty a small battery within 10 minutes. If you replace this battery with one with a higher capacity, the runtime increases to over 20 minutes. It is also possible to achieve runtimes of one hour with a large battery and a low-capacity pressure washer.

When buying batteries, two parameters play a decisive role:

  • Voltage (given in volts)
  • Battery capacity (given in Ah)

The higher these two values are, the longer a certain power can be retrieved. Depending on the manufacturer, rechargeable batteries for portable pressure washers have between 18 V and 40 V. Each battery-powered device is designed for a specific voltage. When buying rechargeable batteries, the voltage must always match the device.

The situation is different with the battery capacity. Suitable batteries with a higher (or lower) capacity can be exchanged without any problems. The capacity ranges roughly between 2 Ah – 6 Ah. The higher the capacity, the heavier and more expensive the battery packs become. Especially if you own several battery-powered devices, it may make more sense to buy three 2 Ah battery packs instead of one with 6 Ah.

Operation with hot water

Full-fledged hot-water pressure washers use diesel or, in rare cases, electricity to heat the water to over 100 °C. In principle, these devices are not designed for home use, as they are very large, expensive and energy-hungry. Mobile high-pressure cleaners draw their energy from rechargeable batteries, and so far the runtime is just about sufficient. Heating water to over 100 °C so quickly is not possible with a rechargeable battery for garden tools.

However, this does not mean that you have to completely do without the dirt-dissolving effect of warm or hot water. Especially oil and grease that has settled on surfaces can be removed much better with warm water. The heat makes it easier to break the molecular bonds of oil and grease, and bacteria and algae can also be removed more quickly.

To operate a mobile high-pressure cleaner with hot water, you must first heat the water and then fill it into the water tank of the device. However, follow the instructions in the operating manual. The water temperature must not exceed 40 °C – 60 °C, depending on the unit. This means that the cleaning effect is not as good as that of full-fledged hot water high-pressure cleaners, but it is at least significantly better than with cold tap water.

Portable pressure washers with suction function

suction function

Here we mainly look at portable pressure washers with a rechargeable battery and integrated water tank. Since the water is sucked directly from the water tank, there is no possibility of drawing water from alternative sources such as lakes or cisterns.

Even those models with a fixed water connection, i.e. a possibility to connect the garden hose to the water tank, cannot draw in water on their own. Because of the intermediate water tank, no negative pressure can be built up. If you absolutely want to use the water from your rain barrel, you have to pump it into the water tank of the pressure washer.

However, there are also compact pressure washers without an integrated water tank. These rely on a fixed water connection or alternative water sources and are able to draw in water themselves. The mobility advantage here is mainly due to the battery operation and the fact that there is no need for a power connection. If the suction function in particular is important to you, you should also look at conventional self-priming high-pressure cleaners.
